Roysten Abel

A cultural alchemist

Roysten Abel is a theatre director, cultural alchemist, and relentless listener of the world. For over three decades, he has stood at the crossroads of tradition and experiment – where folk memory meets contemporary urgency, where ancient voices find new breath.

Rooted in India yet unmistakably global in reach, Roysten’s work dissolves borders: between performer and audience, between the sacred and the everyday, between what has been preserved and what must be reimagined. His theatre does not shout. It listens. And then it sings.

Curiosity that refused to stay still

Roysten’s journey began with a curiosity that refused to stay still. Trained in theatre but shaped equally by travel, music, anthropology, and lived experience, he gravitated toward forms that were disappearing – or worse, being frozen in time.

Rather than “preserve” traditions behind glass, he chose to activate them. To place folk performers on global stages. To allow ritual, rhythm, and community memory to converse with contemporary aesthetics.

This journey has taken him from intimate village spaces to major international festivals, always carrying the same question forward.
